That was the last straw. Luckily I found Dr. Grantham later on, who also offers discounted rates for indigent patients.
During another visit, they scheduled me for an appointment one day, and when I arrived that day, they told me I had the wrong day. I went home and looked, and I was right all along. I had the right day. They did not.
From day one, Dr. Grantham's staff have been nothing but happy to go the extra mile to do everything they could to help me. It took them no more than THREE DAYS to get up to speed on my very complicated situation, finish ALL the paperwork, have the doctor sign it, and plan for the blood draw at another location. We arranged to have the blood drawn, packed up and shipped off at the hospital, as it is a very complicated test that they have never seen before. I accomplished more with Dr. Grantham in three days than I did in three months at First Choice. Dr. Grantham and his staff will never fully understand how truly grateful I am for that.
During another incident, they sent me a bill in the mail claiming I owed them $10, when I already pain them in full. I had to submit my bank statements to prove that I owed them nothing.
The first place I found was First Choice Primary Care. They only had appointments available once every two months. I'm guessing it's because there are so many indigent patients who need care that the doctor can't get through the caseload fast enough.
But I was willing to do anything within reason to have diagnostic care, so I wanted to do whatever they needed me to do. My first day there, I saw the nurse for my baseline assessment. I went into a lot of detail about my undiagnosed and uninsured situation. I was as thorough and as helpful as I could be. But she was extremely dismissive and didn't listen to me AT ALL. She basically turned her nose up at me and kept saying things like, "You need a specialist," and "We can't help you here." I almost had to beg for her help. She finally reluctantly agreed to schedule me for an appointment to see the doctor. When I called later to confirm this, I found out that they scheduled me with a nurse yet again, so I had to reschedule.
During another visit, I arrived at First Choice only to discover that my appointment was at the health department. No one told me this. So I asked where the health department was, and I later found out that they gave me the wrong address. My roommate drove me all over Macon for over an hour, and we never found it.
Now that I am pursing whole exome sequencing and whole genome sequencing, I know I can count on them to ensure that the entire process goes smoothly.
I have been undiagnosed and uninsured for 12 years, and I am always in need of quality diagnostic care for indigent patients.
Then, at my next appointment, my doctor and I filled out what we could. He said he would call the lab to get help with the rest of it. For the next three months, I hounded First Choice to finish the paperwork, but all I got was excuses. They would tell me it's not done yet. They would tell me to call back tomorrow, so I did, and got more excuses. They would tell me to call back at noon, and I did, and got more excuses. Just one excuse after another. I have been undiagnosed and uninsured for 12 years, and I raised the entire $1,500 with the hopes that the blood test could change my life forever. They knew that. But it's as if they just gave up on me. And all I needed was 4 pages of paperwork. I'm not here to point fingers. I don't know who is at fault. But that was an agonizing three months.
They finally lost my business for good when I had an appointment one day so that my doctor could fill out some complicated paperwork for a genetic blood test. First of all, the lab has to mail the doctor's office a test kit. The lab had to mail it to them twice because they couldn't keep track of it. Finally the lab just mailed it to my house instead.
Thank you, Dr Grantham and staff, for making my undiagnosed life as simple as it can be. You have all been immensely helpful.
